Sarguja Masks

In the Sarguja area, masks of Gawara Mata are worn on Vaishakhi Purnima, Goriadeo masks are placed on doors to ward off evil, and Doodh Goriya Deva masks are placed in cowsheds to ensure an abundance of cattle.

Some masks are also worn in the Saila dances. During Pauseh, the bearded Brahmdeo mask is honoured, while during Kartik, after the harvest, the Kat Bilva mask dances Saila from house-to-house.

Among the Rajwars, Hanuman is regarded as the god of music and dance. His mask is sometimes worshipped before beginning the dance and he is remembered while making a pyramid during the dance.

The masks of this region are made of Ber, Haldu, Beeja Khamhar, and Kasami wood.
